Digi pack promotion advert

From getting feedback of my peer members, the digi pack in which got the most votes was the "digi pack design 4" with the coloured CD. Due to the results of that I created the design for the promotion advert for my chosen band "Edelweiss". The design of this advert corresponds with the digi pack. I have done this so that the audience can recognise the design and the promotion release of this album due to having the same colour scheme, photograph and layout. I have included quotes from big labels such as NME and Rolling Stones because these names usually write critiques for bands and artists who create music in the genre of indie, rock, punk and alternative. I have also put these names onto the advert because it will attract the target audience of what I want to have for my band; people who listen to indie, punk rock music. Furthermore, I have put the font sizing of the release date larger than most of the writing on the advert because I want the fans and people who would view the advert, to know straight away when the release date is. Moreover, the colour scheme is kept simple of black and white because it corresponds with the genre of music that I have chosen of indie, rock but it also shows the quirky style of the band members on to the digi pack and the advert for the release of the digi pack that I have designed.

Which digipack design worked well?

From the feedback given from the series of digipacks tat I created. The digi pack which got the most votes but also in my favour was "digipack design 4" with the CD designs which is black and white but the white areas have been filled out with different colours for each band member. Here is the digi pack in which I will use for as the promotional package of the release of Edelweiss' album...

I have chosen this design because I think that the brand image and band identity is clear on this digipack. The design clearly reflects the band member's quirky attitude towards their style and the way they act and pose on the photograph of the digipack. I also think that this design layout, colour scheme and the fonts used on the digipack reflect the genre of music that is produces from this band. I also wanted the colour scheme to be kept simple yet with huge contrast on colours and so the use of black whites and no greys creates the contrast in colour to be quirky. Moreover, on the back of the digipack, I have included the logo of Polydor which is a well known record production company who has signed artists and bands such as The Maccabees. Furthermore, the back cover also has a bar code and the websites of the band Edelweiss for their fan page and the website of their record company, Polydor. I have done this because it is what is usually included onto the digipack.

Feedback from the digi pack designs

The pie chart above shows the amount of votes I got from each of the four designs that I created for my digipack. As you can see the digipack design four got the most votes and so this is what I will use for the digipack for my band and the promotion package.

Screen shots to show how I have editied the photographs for my album cover.

To get the black and white effect on the photographs for the album cover, I first took photographs of each band member invididually then on photoshop I edited then one by one. Above id a screen shot to show how I editied the brightness and contrast of the lead singer (Dec).

After that I selected image > adjustments > theshhold. With this effect the black and white cartoon appearence of the photograph is given. I have done this effect for the album cover because I think that it establishes the indie gypsy punk genre of their music and the quirkiness of the band. This process was done for each of the band members individually.

After I edited all three band members, I put the photographs all on a black photoshop document, this allowed me to assemble the band members together. I have done it so that the lead singer is in the middle and the drummer and the keyboard player is at side.

After assembling the band members together, I thought that it may need some colour seeing as one of the digi packs was completely black and white. I have done this by using paint and roughly selected the area that was white to a colour. Each band member is a different colour because I wanted them to have a colour which symbolised them. This is similar to the band called JLS where each band member has a different colour. Furthermore, I think that the rough colouring in of the band members is quirky and reflects the genre of their music. Moreover, I think that this photograph works well for the album cover because each of the facial expressions are black and they are looking at the camera. I do not think that this technique would have worked if the band members were smiling.

Software used to create my digi pack designs

To create the designs for my digi pack, I have used:

  • Windows Power Point for create the CD and the album cover and back. This was mainly the assembly process.
  • Photoshop to edit the photographs used on the digi pack designs
  • Paint for the use of colour on some of the photographs.
  • A website called Font Space for the creation of the band's name.

I have created two slightly different designs for the CD because I was unsure on whether colour should be added to the digi pack because the rest is in black and white.

Brand image

Below are screen shot images of fonts in which i intent to use for my band identity. this will be included on my digipack cover, CD design and the album advertisement. This font will act as a logo for my band and so this band identity will be recognised by their fans. This font style will be used to symbolise the band and so it will be shown everywhere where ever the band are.  I have created two example of designs in which I hope to choose one of them to act as a logo for my band. below are the two examples of font.

Above is a screen shot of where I found the style of fonts, this website allowed me to create the the name of which I wanted.

Actual locations and props used for music video

I decided to film the band members at Woodthorpe Park in Nottingham. At the time of when I filmed, it snowed, and this was good because it added to the mysterious and eerie atmosphere.

The other location of which I chose to film was in a dark drama room in school. This was also a good location of where to film the band members playing the instruments and singing the song because of the plain black background. the darkness of the room created and reflected the gypsy punk genre of the song.

Here is one of the lighting props in which I have used for when I filmed the band play the instruments in the drama room. The lighting was used to to shine on the band members as they were playing the instruments and singing the song.

Throughout my music video I have used candles, this is what I have intended to used from the beginning of planning my music video.

When it came to filming the band playing the instruments and singing the song in the black drama room, some of the instruments and props we had did not match what I had in mind for my music video. I wanted to have a microphone and stand for the lead singer to sing the song. I was not able to include this into my music video because we did not have it. So I improvised by not having a microphone and stand in my music video. Furthermore, the drum kit in which we had, did nit have the stand to assemble it together, so I decided to show the drummer playing the drums scattered around. In my opinion, this looked better then what I imagined it to be. I think that the drum kit looks better then it assembled together as how it would normally be seen.

I also used beer bottles in my music video, this is what I initially intended to used for my music video.

As I first planned it, i have included someone smoking in my music video.

Deleted shots from my final music video

Above I have put the clips in which I filmed but I did not include them into my music video for various reasons. The reasons to why I have deleted the clips from my final music video are listed below:

·         Clip 1
- Shows my chosen drummer for my music video playing the keyboard. I initially thought that it would look comical whilst filming the band members playing the instruments. However, when it came to processing and assembling the video together, I found that it did not fit in. Moreover, it would be confusing for my audience to understand because they may get muddled up with who the real drummer and keyboard player is in my music video.
- On the other hand, I have included some clips where the drummer is playing the guitar. At first, I was unsure on whether to keep the slip in, but from feedback that was given based on my rough cut, people said that it looked good but also included humour to the music video. They also said that it did not look out of place and so it flowed with my music video.
·         Clip 2
- I have taken this clip out of my music video because I did not want to show other of the band members to be seen singing the lyrics of the song. This is because I want my audience to be clear on to who is the lead singer of the band in my music video.
·         Clip 3
- Based on the feedback given and my own perspective, not many people liked the scene of where the drummer is shown smoking. Some said that if there was smoking scenes, it should have been the lead singer smoking because he is the main person of the music video. The other point in which the smoking scenes were unfavourable was because it was filmed in a different location and so it did not correspond with the rest of the music video. With this in mind, I have still chosen to keep some of the smoking scenes in my final music video but I have shortened it so that the clip is not prolonged.
·         Clip 4
- I have taken this out of my music video because it was showing the band members messing about. I have kept some of the scenes where it shows this because it adds humour to my music video.
·         Clip 5
- This clip I included in my rough cut, however, in my final cut for my music video I have take it out. This is because I wanted the music video to end with the lead singer blowing the candle out and not the drummer.
·         Clip 6
- I wanted to show all the candles in a row. While filming, one of the candles fell over and so this was not included in my music video because it was not what I wanted to show in my music video.

Feed back from Final music video

From the feedback that I have had from my final music video when compared to my rough cut, people have said that it looks more professional with exception to the poor quality of the video itself. They have said that once I took the moving Lego man out it instantly changed by grabbing the audience's attention, because with the moving Lego man, the audience felt that they lost interest because it was prolonged. From my final music video they have also said that the timing of the lip synchronisation is good however, there are some clips where it is off time, but it is not extremely noticeable. They have also said that the costume and location choices match perfectly with the genre and the lyrics of the song that I have chosen. Moreover, they have said that the band image that I have created is clear and corresponds with the genre of music and my target audience.

The final music video

Above is the final cut for my music video of the song Fiasco by the band called Edelweiss. I have taken aboard some of the critical feedback given from my peers and teacher. I have kept some of the clips which some people said they did not think it would; however, I thought that it worked well with my music video. Some of the clips in the music video I found that it became blurry. At first I did not think that it worked, but I find that it adds to the mysterious aspect of the genre of the music that I have chosen for my music video.

Plan for Digipack cover

Below are the templates in which I intend to used to create my Digi pack cover and CD design.
